The Musée du Débarquement in Arromanches-les-Bains replaces the original building from the 1950s with architecture that aims to be in dialogue with the landscape. The new building captures the historical significance of the site in a clear form and makes the coastline itself one of the exhibits. Photos: Antoine Cardi Geography and buildings in dialogue “When the relics have disappeared, the museum will remain” – with this guiding principle, the architects developed a building that preserves the memories beyond the physical collection. The design is based on the idea of a landscape museum. A clearly structured facade made of light-coloured concrete surrounds the body of the building within the sensitive context between the village and the coast. Eight-metre-high columns, a cantilevered porch and joists spanning up to twelve metres define the structural order of the building. They enable spacious, column-free exhibition areas to be created and can be clearly seen in the facade grid design. The appearance is reminiscent of the Phoenix breakwaters, which were embedded in the sea as huge concrete caissons when the Allies landed. Photos: Antoine Cardi ### Resistance to the sea The project team was faced with particular challenges due to the location directly on the tidal zone. A different material strategy was developed in order to permanently counteract the salty spray. For example, the large panes with heights of up to four and a half metres could be combined with extremely slim profiles and the filigree aesthetics of the design could be adopted without visually dominating the facade grid structure. On the exterior of the mullion/transom facade with forster thermfix vario which is exposed to the weather, stainless steel (Inox) cover profiles ensure high corrosion resistance. Photos: Antoine Cardi Material continuity and safety The material logic continues in the entrance areas. Double-leaf entrance doors and emergency exits are integrated into the facade with the forster unico system. The thermally insulated profiles fit seamlessly into the large-surface mullion/transom construction and at the same time perform safety-relevant functions within the transparent building shell. Fire resistant doors from the forster fuego light EI60 series are used inside. They give structure to the transitions between the exhibition areas and ensure the required fire resistance duration without compromising the open feeling of spaciousness. Thanks to the slim steel profiles, architectural continuity is also maintained here.
